Fall Prevention
According to the CDC falls were the leading cause of death among adults over 65 years of age in 2019 and in the same year there were 3 million emergency room visits related to falls in older adults. Falls are serious and can be debilitating. Falls can lead to fractures, head injuries, or a fear of falling. These all have serious ramifications. There is a positive correlation between hip fractures in the elderly and all cause mortality. Thus the importance of preventing falls and fractures cannot be emphasized enough. A fear of falling is also its own condition and has negative consequences. When a fear of falling develops this leads to further sedentary behavior. This then leads to further development of weakness and in turn leads to more falls in the future. Fall prevention in something we commonly see and treat in physical therapy.
