Achilles Tendon Repair

The achilles tendon is the longest tendon in our body. It connects our calf muscles (our gastrocnemius and soleus) to our heel bone. The achilles tendon can rupture as a result of a traumatic incident. This usually occurs as a sports injury where an individual starts and stops abruptly or pivots and changes direction forcefully. The achilles tendon can also rupture as a result of a gradual wear and tear on the tendon due to previous achilles tendonitis. When the achilles ruptures an individual may hear or feel a pop in the heel. The individual may then have high levels of pain, swelling, and an inability to stand, walk, or put weight through the affected leg. When the achilles ruptures it usually ruptures in area just above the heel bone that gets poor blood flow. This make it more prone to rupture. After this injury an individual will most likely be recommended for an achilles tendon repair. During an achilles tendon repair the surgeron will enter the lower leg and find the two portions of the Achilles and suture them back together. Physical therapy can begin shortly thereafter.

After surgery in physical therapy we follow a specific protocol to rehabilitate the achilles. Some surgeons may have their own protocols while others allow for a more general protocol. Initially there will be a period of time where the patient will be non weight bearing in a walking boot. Physical therapy is still important during this time. In this time we work to reduce pain, reduce swelling, restore range of motion, and work on strength in non weight bearing positions so it is a smooth transition to standing and walking when the patient is discharged from the boot. Once the patient is cleared from the boot we continue to progress the program per the rehab protocol until the patient achieves their goals. Patients tend to have excellent results after this surgery.
